With RedHat going in "other" directions, I am looking at the alternatives, Fedora, upgrading RedHat, or Debian. As my server is used primarily for hosting my customers web sites, I want to know:

Is Debian recommended, acceptable, etc. for a web hosting environment? Would it be better or worse than staying with RedHat or going to Fedora?

Any input or thoughts are welcome.

And yes, I have read all the other posts but find nothing specifically talking about Debian in a web hosting environment.

Hello,

I must confess I admin alot of debian boxes out there on the net. I am also biased towards debian in the server arena and I feel there's not much competition either. That said take what I say with a grain of salt, do you own research and make up your own mind based on that :)

I use debian on a number of boxes, I find that apt is a far superior package managment. Debian is based on security first then product releases. This is why 'stable' runs alot of older releases rather than bleeding edge. Default out of the box debian installs clean and secure for the most part, unlike redhat which can be hacked in under a minute, with a default install (note you can do a custom rollout of redhat that is secure but it takes alot more work).

I would think debian to be a better distro for any server services while redhat is more suited for workstation type.
