View Full Version : Why does this site run vBulletin instead of something free like phpBB?
I'm just wondering, obviously the SB folks wouldn't need support... why paid for vBulletin?
I'm curious coz most of the forum sites I've been to also run vBulletin, but I guess maybe they want to get support from them?

Hello,
Thats because most fo the free oens can easily be hacked and also do not offer the amount of support/functions as with vb.

In that case upgrade to vBulletin 2.3.1 since there's an known exploit with 2.3.0

By the way I'm joking. I know it only came out today. :D

I think we had a vBulletin license sitting around from back in the day. We also took an internal poll and people seemed to prefer the feature set of vBulletin over the other alternatives (phpBB was considered as well).

Would you consider phpBB2.2 when it comes out. It will be much more feature rich :).

I guess what doesn't make sense is why would they go to a lesser quality board when they've already got a paid license for vBulletin. i've used both and there's simply no comparison between the two.

i wonder if you can add additional user fields... just something that would probably be useful would be to add two fields...
OS and Control Panel (CP) for each user if applicable.
It would make it quicker and easier to help people when i see their name and then see their OS and CP next to it. Maybe located under "Location:"
It's just a thought, but I bet SB staff would like it too. Not that you couldn't look it up, but it would be convenient for it to be there. Not everyone posts in the right forums.

One of the things VBulletin can never do is remember what posts I have and have not looked at. Mainly, it doesn't highlight all the new posts I have not looked at, which is annoying. And means I have to wade through already looked at posts.

Agreed. That's one thing that's always annoyed me about vBulletin.
However I'll say this. i'm running a bunch of boards for customers and I've installed the beta 5 version of vBulletin in one large production environment.
That problem, along with a slew of others has been addressed.
Some of the other features I really like are now it doesn't count every time you view a thread as 1 view. it counts each time a different person views it.
Search within this forum right on the forum page..
Just too much to list.
The new vBulletin 3.0 is a complete restructuring of the database, and is a huge upgrade. You'll like it i'm sure.

That's good to hear. Hopefully I can see it implemented here or at other forums I frequent.
