View Full Version : IIS Hangs or Crashes

My IIS seems to hang now and then, and for the last two nights crashes about 3 or 4 in the morning. I come from a web design, not server administration background, so figuring out what is amiss seems to be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

I've gone through the no-brainers like checking for viruses. Nothing weird shows up in my Event Viewer. Like I said, I really don't know what I'm doing here, but nothing seems different from when it is running good, no intrusions it seems or error messages, or anything like that.

Here is my only clue: Sometimes when it hangs, and I log in through Terminal Services to restart IIS (which fixes the problem temporarily), IIS won't open when I double-click the Internet Services Manager icon. Weird huh? I eventually learned to restart IIS through a command line, but before I learned to do this, I would go to restart the whole server (Restart from the shut down menu) and I would get a file save box asking if I want to save my .msc. What the heck is that all about? It doesn't always do this, sometimes when it hangs, I can just double-click Internet Services Manager and restart from there. Most times I have to do the command line thing.

Like I said, I am from a web design background and used to virtual hosting. This is my first dedicated server, and I'd really like it to work. But part of me wishes that the server was in my office so that I can take a baseball bat to it and go back to virtual hosting.

Any ideas? Helpful hints? Are there any easy to use programs for diagnosing hang ups and crashes. I downloaded WinDbg from MS, but what it spits out is Greek to me.

I welcome any input, thanks!
