View Full Version : Transferring Existing Name Servers?

I am moving my exisitng domain accounts from my old host to a new ServerBeach Redhat Linux 7.3 Server w/Cpanel. I have purchased an additional IP address so I can run my own nameservers on my machine. Once I have all of my accounts transferred from my previous host, I was intending on just changing the ip addresses in the 'Domain Host Information' section in my domain registrar account. So when the changes propagate in 24-48 hours, the transition to the new server should be seamless ... and I would not have to modify 'Name Server Information' for each of my domains. In order to do this, I am assuming that I must 'Assign an ip for a new nameserver:' under 'Manage nameserver IPs' in WHM. This is the problem I am running into, I get an error message when I try to assign an IP to ns1.mydomain.com

Sorry, the nameserver ns1.mydomain.com already has the ip X.X.X.X assigned to it.

Is there a way to force this (in Cpanel or by editing named.conf) so that it will be ready when the 'Domain Host Information' (the ip addresses I specify for ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com in my domain registrar account) go into effect? Or do I have to wait until the changes are realized to assign IPs to my nameservers? I am trying to avoid any unnecessary downtime. I have heard that editing .conf files by hand can break CPanel, so I thought I would ask first and see if anyone has experienced a similar problem. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

I have exactly the same issue.

Did you ever find a solution to this?

As long as you have domain.com in the DNS zones and there are A records for ns1 and ns2, it should work OK.

I went to the cpanel.net forums and did a search for "nameserver address" and it brought up many posts that may be of some use to you (if you're not already, you'll have to register to search/post/view). :)
