I read something about not allowin direct root logins or it being disabled in another forum. ITS THE KIND OF THING THAT SHOULD BE COMUNICATED to the user before trying it 100 times. I am using putty ssh and trying to loing to my server to run redhat update as root. No go. either the root pass is wrong or I am missing some key info. PLEASE HELP. WILL SEND BLOOD BY EMAIL...

THANKS:o

jsbthree,

You never log in directly with root access. You need to log in first with your username/password you picked when you bought your server. If I recall, this information is also included in the email sent to you (it's been a while since I got my server). If you don't know what your account name and password is, best contact support.

Once logged in, enter the command 'su' for superuser and enter your root password.

You can't ftp to your server with the root password either.

I loged in with my username and password. Once loged in I typed login root
it asks for a password which I give as the root password.
loging incorrect

Now is there something about that in the email.? There could be but I missed it.. Ill go look but unless I find it .. is there another step to passing the root to the os.. or is it impossible .. if so its useless... I know Im missing something I just don[t know what..

but thanks for the help anyway...

Alternatively, do you have Webmin on the server? It has a command-prompt where you can run things like up2date without having to use SSH.

you didn't read through dhigbee's post..

once you log in, you need to type "su". when it asks for a password, you use the root password and the prompt should change to a # symbol.

true charlie once again you are correct.. sorry dig.. it worked.. Only now I have the following. I been trying to upgrade my os and finally got through to learn

On August 10th, the SSL certificate that shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 (including, AS, ES, and WS) and Red Hat Linux 7.1 through 7.3 expired. Customers running RHEL and older versions of RHL need to immediately obtain updated SSL certificates if they have not already done so.

so I have RH 7 and had asked for 8 .. which either way didn't prepare me for the above... any ideasl.. thanks guys

If you specified a control panel (like Ensim) then unfortunately you get whatever release of RedHat that is supported by it.

E.g. Ensim requires RH 7.3 (?)

And if they only support 7.2 then its my mistake. They do have downloads for 9 however it appears they are unsupported. The 8 looks like it is supported but I really can't tell without reading every line which I don't have time to do right now.

Thanks for the heads up.. I never considered what you said till now and you are correct. SB should say something however if the customer has 8 which I did... before going back a version which they did.. No big deal .Live and learn.

I believe the issue you pasted above is discussed at the following location: http://rhn.redhat.com/help/faq/all_faqs.pxt#408

Everyone who is using Redhat needs to realize that RedHat will stop releasing bug fixes and security updates for everything *except* RedHat 9 by the end of this year. Those of you who are dependent on RedHat distributions may want to start working on an upgrade plan for all of their current systems. The control panels are starting to support RedHat 9 (Plesk and CPanel so far), so those are easy upgrades for the user. I hear ServerBeach is going to release RedHat 9 pretty soon ;)
