I am loosing the last remaining hairs on my head over this problem. Here's the scenario:
I got my Win2003 Power Server from SB and one of the first thing I wanted to do was set up the free asp.net Enterprise Manager (http://sourceforge.net/projects/asp-ent-man/). I've set up this nifty application on at least 3 other servers and it has always worked straight 'out-of-the-box'. Just drop it in and go. When I set it up on my SB server, I got an error: "The directory does not exist or is not accessible because of security settings." Did some googleing and found lots of info about setting permissions for the asp.net account, etc. but nothing worked. Finally I gave up and put in a support request to SB thinking they've probably seen this before and could get it going quickly. Things got ugly from there.
I'm not exactly sure what they did, but the highlights include:
a) knocking SQL Server out and leaving it. I managed to get it going myself after they said "We haven't done any changes." The event log tells quite a different story.
b) Whacked out IIS, and left it offline. This is after I explained that it was a production server and they should be careful. Turns out they had done something that caused the .net framework to bonk every time a request was made. IIS shuts down the application if it fails 5 times in five minutes, so this took the whole default application down.
The other big deal is c) Enabled ALL web service extentions (even added new ones), and *gasp* gave FULL CONTROL to the Internet Guest account (actually ALL accounts) to the ENTIRE wwwroot folder and all subfolders, including those not even accessible to the internet. Again, they left it like that. Even I know this is not good.
The current status is www and sql server are up, anything related to .net is down. I can't even run the .net framework wizards anymore. I get a series of ugly error popups. I have asked SB to tell me what they did, but no reply so far. They cleared the event log at some point, too.
I mention this stuff not to start a flame war against SB. Really, that's another thread. I am satisfied with the price/product they offer. Self-managed really means do-it-yourself, which is why I'm here now. I would like to find someone who can help me out without screwing it up even worse. And yes, I will gladly pay a competent, kind, soul to help me.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Drew:)
