View Full Version : Change Network Card to 100 mbit on Win3k?

I noticed that I can download off the internet FASTER than I can transfer files between my 2 serverbeach boxes. Then I noticed that the network card was set to 10 mbit. What would happen if I bumped it up to 100 megabit? Would it work or take me off the network?

100 mbit connection between my boxes would be VERY nice. Took me 8 mins to transfer a 450 meg file today. I had to zip the files up as FTP would time out after about 50 small files.

I think the cards themselves are 10/100 capable. What is restricting them is the hubs they are connected to. Kightfoo explained this in a post on the General board. I think they are doing this to prevent people from going over their bandwidth allocation.

Surely the bandwidth count DONT include LAN traffic betwees my 3 serverbeach servers does it? Im only using less than 20 gig per month so I think I have plenty left to spare *grin*

I just find it weird that I can download files off the net faster than I can transfer them between boxes.

The switch (hubs are yuck! yuck!) that boxes are connected to have the ports set to 10mbps.

The network cards in the boxes are 10/100 NIC's, however, the port on the switch it plugs into is set to 10mbps so if you set your NIC to manualy be at 100mbps you'll either nock your computer off the switch (a bad thing - loss of connectivity) or it will fail.

While it would be nice to have 100mbps between machines (no argument there) the method ServerBeach uses to ensure a box doesn't flood the network is simple and effecient. Setting the ports to 10mbps on the switches the box's connect to is a smart move.
