Q about file upload

Im a newbie so i want to make sure Im asking this right

when I create a new account i see a www icon and a public_html folder
now if I were to upload an entire site would I upload to the www folder or public_html folder or it wouldnt matter?

The real folder is "public_html" the "www" is pretty much a shortcut to the same place.
