I'm trying to set up DNS to work off my server instead of using the DNS Tool. However, when I try to change the name server for one of my domains with GoDaddy, I get a message saying that my name server is not a registered name server and therefore it won't let me change it. So, what do I need to do to get this to work?
Thanks
You would need to register a nameserver ...ns1.whateverdomain.com. You would need to register 2 if you want to do your own DNS. If you choose to use ServerBeach for slave DNS, then you would only need 1.

Register the name server where? I have Server Beach set for slave DNS and I followed the directions posted below:

Setting YOUR server to be PRIMARY Name Server...
1) In WHM, run the "Initial Nameserver Setup" to activate the Nameserver services on your box, f you haven't done this already. If you're not sure, run it anyway.
2) Click on the "Modify Resolver Configuration" setup and set it to:
PRIMARY: 127.0.0.1
SECONDARY: ns1.geodns.net
TERTIRARY: ns2.geodns.net
I actually had to use the IP addresses for the SECONDARY & TERTIRARY. It wouldn't accept anything other than IPs.
3) Log into your my.serverbeach.com site and go to the DNS Tool. Set up the domain there, but make sure to set it up as a SLAVE. Put in the IP address of your server that's acting as the primary name server.
4) When you register your domain, set your Name Servers with your registrar for your domain to:
PRIMARY: ns1.yourdomainame.com
SECONDARY: ns1.geodns.net
TERTIRARY: ns2.geodns.net
Can't register PRIMARY name server because it tells me that my server is not a registered name server.
5) Go to WHM and setup the associated account.
6) Make sure you have the following entries in the master zone DNS file.
yourdomainname.com. IN NS ns1.yourdomainname.com.
yourdomainname.com. IN NS ns1.geodns.net.
yourdomainname.com. IN NS ns2.geodns.net.
Also add an A record entry for ns1.yourdomainname.com that points to the IP address.
NOTE 1) Remember anything you do with the registrar will take about anywhere from one to three days for it to let the rest of the internet community know the new information. If you had already registered your domain, no problem, just go back to registrar and let them know of the changes to match what's up above, then wait a few days for the changes to take affect.
NOTE 2) Now when you add new domains to your server, you will need to add their DNS records using WHM and also add them into SB's DNS Tool as secondary (slave).

You must register ns1.yourdomain.com as a nameserver at the same place that you registered your domain. If you do not register ns1.yourdomain.com as a nameserver, you cannot use it as a nameserver for other domains.
You should contact your registrar for more information. :)

Steve,
You need to log into GoDaddy account manager and add set up your domain/IP address as a nameserver in the Domain Host Information section. This creates and registers the NS1.yourdomain.com and tells the registrar, and the rest of the world, your IP address/domain are to be treated as a name server.
Once updated (may take a little while), you can then add change your nameserver information under the Name Server Information section.

That did the trick. My name server is working great now. Thanks for the help.

I think I followed everything that has been mentioned in this thread.
All of my domians point to ns1.geodns.net and ns2
My server is waiting for said particular domain names to be requested.
It seems that the server beach name servers (ns1.geodns.net and ns2) aren't getting updated with my server's dns info, even though they know that mydomains.com is supposed to go to my ip. If they know which IP the domain is poitning to, why can't they still forward the requests to the ip without the specific dns info?
Is there a place where I can force this update? Is there a place I can have updates happen faster?
My domain names are all pointing to the right places.

Mike,
If you followed "everything" on this thread, then you may be in some trouble. What your asking is not the same problem as the original question of this thread. I suggest you start a new thread.
As I run my own nameservers, I am not familiar with the DNS tool (it didn't exist when I started with SB). Perhaps someone with some experience with the tool would better see your need in a new thread.
Don
Mike,
It may help to remove the domain from SB's DNS tool, and then re-applying it.
Hope it works for you!
