View Full Version : Migration from RH9 to ES3

Wow its been awhile since I have posted here.
I am finally migrating from RH9 to ES3. I am going to upgrade from my current power server to Linux Powerline 3000 + cPanel.
I have been trolling through the forums and know that I need to change my TTL to 300 so I can reduce the delay time of pointing zones to a new IP.
Currently I am the Stealth NS Server. That means the DNS tool points to my current IP.
* Do i have to go through all 70+ domains and change the IP of the Master server to the new one?
* If I do, does that take anytime whatsoever to propagate?
Thanks for any help.

Just a question...why ES? FC seems to be kickin butt...

just assumed that ES would be better than fedora.. and didnt want to get phased out again.. plus figured the support would be faster and better especially with security patches etc

I know that most security patches come for Fedora pretty quickly...atleat right now. The only thing that is negative is the EOL of each core that comes quick, but not as quick as some thought it would. I have been running FC1 for quite sometime now and the EOL isnt until this month...

*Bump*
Anyone?
I just ordered the Powerline 2600 dual proc and need to migrate this week with zero downtime if possible.
Can any of the admins answer the questions about the DNS ?
I think i have everything else taken care of for transferring accounts since CPanel will transfer them.
When CPanel transfers accounts will it transfer the DNS zones?

CPanel will create DNS zones on the new server with the new server's IP (primary one for most, but if you chose 'dedicated IP' box on any in the mass-account transfer and you have free IP's, it'll give it those and create a zone file with the proper IP accordingly) when doing an account or mass-account transfer from within the WHM.
As to DNS: I don't quite get your setup. From what you've described, I can't tell if you mean to say you use the DNS Tool exclusively (domains are in there, our nameservers are the Master, and the various domains have 'ns1.geodns.net' and 'ns2.geodns.net' registered at the registrar level as their authoritative nameservers), or you have the domains in their, but as Slave, and you're providing the Master functionality via the CPanel box?

Thanks for the other answers about zone creation.
We use the DNS tool and set my server as the master for all domains.
So i am (as i understand it) the Stealth Master Nameserver.
The zone templates are altered so when i create an account it sets ns1 and ns2 as the NS records with no mention of my own NS.
One other question i had since we have about 75 domains. is there a way to mass change the zones to have a ttl of 5 seconds prior to the move or do i need to open each zone file up ?
Thanks again!

Since I can't edit my prior message..
; Modified by Web Host Manager
; Zone File for xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.xxxx
$TTL 14400
@ 5 IN SOA server1.westbendweb.com. admin.westbendweb.com. (
2004070704
5
60
3600000
86400
)
I was assuming the $TTL is the actual TTL for the zone record? Is this the value that needs to be changed to 5? This value can not be changed by WHM. So I made a change to the 14400 prior to 'IN'. I have been bouncing around the Net reading howtos and I am still confused.
Basically I need a "for morons" step by step to set my record to a 5 second life for the changeover of servers.
Thanks!

One (hopefully) last question.
How can I transfer informations such as packages and settings from WHM to the new server?
