SCP with access to all dirs?

when I scp with my primaryid, I can not access the vhost's httpd dirs! Any thoughts? Who should I SCP in with?

If you really want access outside the user's dir, you need to log in as root.

You do have the option of adding your user to the groups you need, but not always that files are group readable.

Thanks so much for your help folks, I certainly appreciate it. I have not had much formal training in the operation of dedicated servers, and since I dont work in the industry, I am trying to understand as much as I can with the little free time I do have.
