Hi all.

I currently have a server here running RH9. I am about ready to upgrade my server and was wondering everyones comments on switching to either RHEL30 or Fedora.

I run RHEL30 at home and at work and like is just fine. I have also run Fedora Core1 and Core2. Both seem just great.

I like the idea of the supported OS w/ RHEL30 but I'm not sure if its worth the extra $20/month? At work its not an issue since we have a site license for it.

I would like to hear where everyone else stands on this. Pros/Cons on both Fedora and RHEL30.

thanks in advance,

chris.

A big pro for Fedora would be the fact that you can do an upgrade without reinstalling the OS on your server. Red Hat has gone through a lot of trouble to make sure people do not try to upgrade the consumer versions of Red Hat Linux to the commercial versions. Most of the Fedora development is still driven by Red Hat, so you are still getting a Red Hat product even though it is not officially supported. Fedora is turning into a testbed for upgrades before they are rolled into the Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution.

The $20/mo for Red Hat ES basically covers the privilege of using Red Hat ES, access to RHN via up2date for priority updates, and official support for Red Hat ES via ServerBeach support. You also get the guarantee that there will not be any significant changes to your OS for the next 5 years (well, 4 years now) that may cause compatibility problems for your applications.
