I have a RedHat Enterprise 3 server:

Linux 2.4.21-20.EL #1 Wed Aug 18 20:46:27 EDT 2004 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

And a couple of up2date concerns/questions:

here is my 'up2date -l' output

The following Packages were marked to be skipped by your configuration:

Name Version Rel Reason
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
httpd 2.0.46 38.entPkg name/pattern
perl 5.8.0 88.7 Pkg name/pattern
perl-CGI 2.81 88.7 Pkg name/pattern
perl-CPAN 1.61 88.7 Pkg name/pattern
perl-DB_File 1.804 88.7 Pkg name/pattern
redhat-release 3ES 7.3 Config modified

What is the 'redhat-release' package? Is it even a package? 3ES means RedHat Enterprise Linux 3, what is release 7.3? How can I tell what release I have? I am guessing 7.2? I haven't marked it as a package for up2date to skip like I have for kernel*; perl*; httpd*, etc... This entry seems stays here after all other packages have been updated. How does one update to the newest release or is this line item purely informational? I am guessing that an upgrade would be fairly involved and I would experience some downtime? I used to upgrade my servers via the release CDs. I've never done it though up2date, or over the network, etc...

Also is it safe to update these perl* packages? I heard that these packages should be skipped because it often causes problems, and that Perl should be updated manually. I seem to remember having some problems getting perl running again the last time I updated it. I also haven't been able to get the httpd package to download and install correctly, it always says that the package is corrupt and then it kills up2date (as well as httpd service, which needs to then be manually restarted).

Any suggestions vastly appreciated!
