View Full Version : Hostname A Entry Missing
When I log into WHM I get a popup with the following: (note my domain is not 'domain', I just put that there as a placeholder. I am not sure if it is a good thing to do to put my actual domain here out in the open)
Hostname A Entry Missing!
The server was unable to lookup an an A entry for its hostname (server1.domain.info). This is generally because the entry was never added. However this could also be the result of your nameserver(s) being down. If you would like to attempt to automaticlly add the entry, .
Which I click and I get:
Adding an A entry for your hostname
Found your hostname to be: server1.domain.info
Found your short hostname to be: server1
Found your domain name to be: domain.info
Found your main ip to be: 66.666.66.66 (not my real IP)
If this looks correct,
Add The Entry (box)
Which I also click on and get:
Adding an A entry for server1.domain.info
Zone domain.info does not exist, a new zone for server1.domain.info will be created.
Sorry, a DNS entry for server1.domain.info already exists, please delete it first.
I am not sure what this is telling me except that I must create an A zone entry. I am not sure if it is safe to do as it says and delete the current dns entry.
I know, I feel real dumb right now.
Now I am getting:
(Note not the actual server name or ip):
Adding an A entry for server1.domain.info
IP=66.666.66.66 ndc: connect failed: connection refused Add Complete
I did the ndc fix script and now I get the following when I log on and after I try to add an A entry:
Adding an A entry for server1.domain.info
IP=66.666.66.66 ndc: connection to remote host closed This may indicate that the remote server is using an older version of the command protocol, this host is not authorized to connect, or the key is invalid. Add Complete

I had someone look at this for you. Apparently the /etc/rndc.key file was empty, so running the fixndc script didn't do anything (it didn't have any key to insert in the proper places). I recreated the key file and restarted named so it is working now. I am not sure why that file was blank, but our local CPanel maintainer is looking into it.

Thank you so very much. I am learning more everyday.
I had to put a trouble ticket for this issue and the Server Beach tech support fixed it in record time. Thank You. They inserted the A record and all is fine. I just wanted to show some completion here so that readers don't think this problem went unresolved.

I had the exact same problem on two servers and the tech fixed it pretty quickly my kudos, as they also told me what the problem was I must compliment them on this as it added to my knowledge base as well.

I am also having this issue....
what should be in the /etc/rndc.key file because mine is completely empty.
I will be running my own nameservers once SB comes through with the IP for me.
I am quite capable of fixing this via ssh but .....if someone could tell me what should be in this file I would appreciate it.

Maybe this thread can help:

Is it possible that the information that is supposed to be in /etc/rndc.key is getting read from another file somewhere?
See the thing is...... my /etc/rndc.key file is blank but I'm not getting any error messages about it. I just don't want to have broken when I start bringing my customers sites over to this box.
In /etc/named.conf and /etc/rndc.conf every refererence was to rndc-key like it was supposed to be. I backed up the files and changed all references of rndc-key to rndckey, did a /sbin/service named restart, ran the /scripts/fixndc and the /etc/rndc.key is still blank.
I changed it all back......, did a /sbin/service named restart, ran the /scripts/fixndc and the /etc/rndc.key is still blank.
Honestly, I don't care if is blank as long as it is going to function properly. I don't want to make an issue out of this....I just want some opinions as to whether or not anyone thinks this is going to be a problem. Once I start pointing sites to my new nameservers I don't want to have any major problems.
You'll have to copy the key entry out of /etc/rndc.conf and paste it in /etc/rndc.key .. just the key section, then restart named.

Thanks QT,
I've been a customer going on 1 1/2 days now and although I don't have any serious issues, I really appreciate you prompt replies in the forum.
Let's hope I don't have any major problems in the future....but if I do, I'll know who to go to!
