View Full Version : Anyone willing to help...
I'm a newbie here, and have been able to slowly learn by mistake getting things setup on my server. I have not done alot of admin on a 2003 server nor do I have alot of expeirence setting up DNS on it.
If anyone is willing to help a fella out that would be great. Here are some of my questions and things I need some guidence on. I've already read probably every thread in the forum so don't just point at that.
1. Need to setup Name Servers.
I already have both ip addresses setup on the server and DNS installed. I even think I have it mostly setup.
Questions:
Do I need Reverse lookup zones?
Currently I have 1 domain setup so I have 1 forward zone. I have 2 reverse zones cause the 2 ip addresses are in a different range.
I am not 100% sure I have the second dns setup correctly as it doesn't seem to respond to any requests.
Next is a fireware. What does everyone recommend. I was just going to use ICF till I learned I can't when I am using more then one ip address on the server. So any recommendations here would be great.
I'm kinda working on a deadline to get this serversetup and HEML ready to go and to move all of my clients to it before I have to renew at what will be my EX hosting provider.
Thanks in advance for any help.

You do not need to configure reverse DNS zones because ServerBeach manages the reverse DNS for all ServerBeach IP addresses. If you need to change the reverse DNS entry for one of your IP addresses, you will need to submit a PTR Request through the Request Support form in MyServerBeach. As for the second nameserver, are you not able to ping the IP address that it is configured on, or is it pinging and just not responding to DNS queries?

knightfoo posted a Firewall Application List (http://forums.serverbeach.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1699) in the HowTos forum that you may find useful. You should also search the forums for firewalls that other users have installed and had success with.

It doesn't help anyone when you're only answer is "I'll help you." If you are able to help provide answers to questions in this forum, please provide them when you post a reply. We certainly appreciate the help you've provided out here in the past. :)

Ok, about the Reverse DNS.
My first ip seems to already have a PTR record.
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ptr.ch?ip=66.135.38.221
Asking ns2.serverbeach.com. for 221.38.135.66.in-addr.arpa PTR record: Reports win-01.dynamicbydesign.com. [from 69.44.56.89]
I assume this was done when I purchased the server, or did my reverse somehow update the serverbeach.com name server?
And as for my second ip address responding to DNS queries it is now so I must of fixed it in my sleep or something :)
well if I don't need any reverse zone's then I guess I have successfuly setup my DNS server info :) (I wow myself every day).
As for the Firewall list, thanks somehow I missed reading that thread.
My concern on those is the ones listed are Personal firewalls, some have server versions. Is it really necessary to have a SERVER version?
Also it appears Visnetic Firewall might be a good buy since new in it's 2.0 version it has REMOTE Managment of the firewall, which might be handy and helpfull for not locking yourself out of your box. Does anyone have any expeirence with it? I saw two threads 1 guy says he loves it another said it was messing with his SQL server (which I plan to run).
Thanks for everyones help.
