Network Logging

A buddy of mine asked if there was a utility that would monitor his eth0 interface (and all virtual interfaces bound to eth0, eth0:0, eth0:1, etc.) and create some sort of output like what webalizer does for apache. This way he know exactly how much data is going in and out of his machine. I told him I didn't know but was going to see if any of you knew.

If he just wants to know the total amount of traffic, mrtg will do.
If he wants a breakdown by port or IP address, he will have to get something more complicated.
