View Full Version : Frustration with hard drive replacement

I guess I don't really have a question but just needed somewhere to vent my frustration as I'm sitting here with nothing to do but wait. Anyone having a similarly bad day?

We had a hard drive die in our server on Friday. Because of a RAID setup, the machine was still running full-force on just the remaining drive. After submitting a trouble ticket, we got a response decently quickly saying that the hard drive would be replaced, and asking what time frame to schedule it for. We specifically requested one of the evening options (8PM-11:59PM) so that fewer emails would be lost and website downtime would be less important. We also specifically requested multiple times that we be given some idea of when the replacement would actually happen so that we could be sure to be around and deal with getting the server to boot correctly and logging in and reconfiguring the server as quickly as possible to minimize downtime.

Imagine my surprise then, when I wake up to the phone ringing as a customer in an earlier timezone complains about her site being down. Great, I think...the other hard drive died and now everything's screwed. I can't get into the server at all, so I log into ServerBeach and see a response to my trouble ticket - the HD was replaced and the machine was waiting in some "sbrescue" mode, not at all accessible remotely. So instead of having it at a good time, we have the server brought down first thing Monday morning.

Well, hopefully then because it's during business hours we can get a quicker response on the trouble ticket then, right? I replied with instructions on how to make the server bootable and come up correctly (basically just boot from the second hard drive, a very simple change), and now sit here waiting for close to three hours with no response. So there's the first five hours of the East Coast work day already shot, and who knows how much longer it will be.

Soooooooooooooo frustrating...:bang:

Just for a little bit of closure...things finally came back up, but it spent a nice 12 hours down straight through the middle of the business day. Thank goodness for software RAID making the recovery quick and effortless now that the machine is up. Still seems too long...

I tried calling you this afternoon, did not reach you but left a voicemail.

Glad to hear you're back up and running.

What software raid are you using? Just curious.
