I am using bulkregister.com and they seem to allow me to set up ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com on the same IP address as dns servers.

I wasn't able to do this before but it seems like they have relaxed their requirements or something.

Is this going to work ok? Or should I still get a second IP address on my box to run a primary and secondary dns?

Thanks,

If you want to run your own name servers then I would recommend getting another IP and just running them on your server, don’t forget that all customers can use our name servers for free, this is a better solution because you will not have a single point of failure for your DNS (our name servers are on 2 different servers of course).

I definitely want to run my own dns servers because I don't want to have to require my resellers to use the DNS Tool as well as plesk.. would rather just give them a plesk account.

My question was if it is ok to have ns1.blueglassdesign.com and ns2.blueglassdesign.com on the same IP address. It seems to be working fine right now.

thanks,

No, it's not ok. ;)

See:

To be more specific, registrars should not allow multiple registrations to the same IP address. Also, it is bad practice because you completely defeat the purpose of having 2 nameservers, which is redundancy.

I understand those concerns, however, my registrar (bulkregister) seems to allow it, and doesnt putting two IP's on the same box for two dns servers also defeat the purpose of redundency?

Nameservers should be on different physical boxes (if one server goes down, or if named fails on one of them, the domains still resolve).
Some registrars may not allow people to move domains there if both nameservers are on the same IP address.

As far as it continuing to work, that's a good question. It may cause problems when people who use different registrars start moving domains to your nameservers.

That makes sense. I did order an extra IP last week from SB... still waiting on it.

Is it true that if I use SB dns servers that I have to then give my resellers access to the DNS Tool as well as their plesk login?

Thanks,

You should never give anyone access to MyServerBeach. This would allow them full access to your account, including the ability to order new servers/services, use your trouble tickets, reboot your server, and request support.

If you are a reseller with a lot of customers, it is rather difficult to use the DNS Tool effectively. You can use it for slave DNS, and you would only need to log in to add or remove domains. Any changes made on your server would automatically be transferred to the slave servers.
