This is a fantastic How To.. Especially since i apparently set my system up for option 5 in my ignorance. Works nicely for what I do.

I would potentially suggest you putting a direct link to this howto from the welcome to serverbeach email or include it in the how to. Would have saved someone at your support responding to my email :)

Last suggestion.. NONE of the welcome emails or even the support response emails talk about this support forum area. You mention in the Product email about TOS and AUP being important references.. I would recommend putting a link to the forums front door as the third important reference :)

The only reference to this forum area is the logo under the 1800 number which i overlooked .. Its not in the support menu on the side or in the myserverbeach support areas

Thanks again!

Those are some great ideas and probably the easiest to overlook. :)

This was really useful as I found out last night that my primary name server was a box that A) isnt stable and B) I dont want to be associated with any longer.

Anyhow, thanks!

I would like to know if I can in any way use a script to update the SB DNS Tools for my hosted domains. The reason I ask is that I don't want to set up my own DNS servers, but use SB DNS servers, but I would like to be able to add/update/remove domains and subdomains, etc. through our company Intranet, that already has control panel functions.

Is this possible? How would I go about interfacing with the SB DNS Tool if it is?

Thanks

I had posed this question to the sales person but he was not sure.

If I'm using Helm on Win 2003 server and I'm using SB dns servers will HELM be able to modify the DNS entries or will I have to do it manually through the SB DNS tool?

Obviously if HELM can't modify the SB DNS servers will HELM be able to modify my own if I run my own DNS servers off of my server?

Helm cannot modify the GeoDNS nameservers, so you will need to run your own DNS servers if you want to use Helm to manage your DNS records. If you use GeoDNS, you'll need to use the DNS Tool.

How long dose it take normally with ServerBeach DNS to resolve a new website once it is put in?

The one and only time I tried the DNS tool, it took ~68 hours before ns[1-2].geodns.net attempted to perform a zone transfer.

I run my own DNS servers, but happened to be moving a customer who previously ran his own ServerBeach server and had a domain pointing to geodns.net already.

I was thinking I'd be all smart and set up the domain on ns[1-2].geodns.net so he would be up instantly, then I'd update the gTLD roots at my convinience.

Maybe it was just bad luck, but that was my experience. Just for giggles I'm going to load up another domain and see how long it takes.

So I go to setup DNS on my Windows 2003 server and find that DNS has not been installed.

I'd hate to have to waste a trouble ticket ($15) just to have a win 2003 cd put in the machine or on the net somewhere so that I can install it.

Or am I just missing something all together.

Thanks.

You're missing something. :)

The pertinent contents of the Windows CD-ROM is located on your server in C:\Windows\i386 or C:\WinNT\i386. You can point the Windows installer to this directory if you need to install additional Windows components.

I kinda figured it had to be there some where :) I just didn't look long enough for it.

Thanks

I'm not yet a ServerBeach customer, but as I get closer to having my dev server working the way I want, I'm closer to making my dedicated server purchase.

I'll be doing virtual hosting with my server, and I plan to not run my own DNS. Instead, my current plan is to use ServerBeach's DNS Tool and let them manage my DNS.

I read knightfoo's excellent post regarding which DNS options to select. I do not plan to have any resellers, and I do not currently nor do I expect in the future to have a lot of domain turnover. But I do hope to add domains frequently -- as anybody in the hosting business does! So hopefully, using the DNS Tool will work well for me. Unfortunately since I'm not a customer, I can't get a preview of this tool. I'm hoping it will be sufficient for me to manage 500+ domains.

This all leads me onto my next feature request as I understand there is not a sytem to allow this currently. I don't use any controlpanels. Instead, I compile and configure and script all my software myself. I write my own PHP front end for managing accounts, domains, email accounts, etc. With my current front end I can fill out a short form, click submit, and all the necessary things happen to add the domain to my server -- webroot directories, apache conf, email, ftp, webstats, mysql database login, etc. The one thing I can't automate is adding the domain to DNS--if I'm going to use SB for primary and secondary. Since SB already has a web-based tool for adding domains to the DNS, how hard would it be to provide a "simple" API for us to script against so we can have our custom domain-adding scripts handle adding to SB DNS, too?

I already know the answer to this.....just run your own primary DNS! I figured it was worth asking. I'd think SB would rather handle both primary and secondary - or - neither because then they wouldn't have any issues with bad zones trying to transfer from customers who don't know what they are doing.

Hey everyone!

I'm a newbie to dedicated servers and I just got setup with a SB Linux server running cPanel. Unfortunately I'm lost on how to setup DNS correctly.

I read through ServerBeach DNS HowTo [Any OS] (http://forums.serverbeach.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=544), and it seems like I would be using option 1. (Use ServerBeach nameservers for primary and secondary nameservers) since I'm not planning on buying a second IP to handle DNS on my server.

My question is: What do I enter into cPanel/WebHost Manager Main >> Server Setup >> Edit Setup in the Primary Nameserver and Secondary Namerserver fields (which are required)? Do I enter ServerBeach's ns1.geodns.net and ns1.geodns.net namerservers or do I put dns1.mydomain.com and dns2.mydomain.com?

Last question: If I'm using ServerBeach's DNS tool and add a sub-domain in cPanel do I also have to add it to the SB DNS tool to have to resolve correctly? I'm guessing, yes.

Thanks advance!

Yes I Kinda like to know this too .

In whm, server configuration, Basic cPanel/WHM Setup

Primary Nameserver I have now , ns1.geodns.net

Secondary Nameserver I have now ns2.geodns.com

I do not have any of my own nameservers registered for this box , and have configured all sites on the box within the dns tools option in myserver beach .

Question is ..

Are the Primary and Secondary ns's in whm to be left blank or is my config above correct ?

thxs . still a newb , but trying to learn all this ..

You can put the GEODNS nameservers, but if you are indeed using the GEODNS nameservers for DNS, you should disable the DNS service in cPanel.

If you add a subdomain in cPanel, you do need to make sure it is listed in the DNS Tool.

Do you mean under Service Manager.

Uncheck
named
Berkely Name Server Daemon (BIND)

Thanks,

Hi Frank!

Yes, that is the correct procedure for disabling the DNS (named) service.
