View Full Version : Changing root password
I would like to change the root password on my server from the default that ServerBeach set up, but if I do, will it affect RapidReboot or ServerBeach's ability to support the server? Do I need to tell ServerBeach the new password I choose?
Thanks,
Ryan

Changing your root password will not affect RapidReboot. However, if there is a problem while your server is booting the technician may require the root password to log in and fix something (such as running fsck manually). You should keep your password up-to-date with the support staff to avoid delays during emergency situations.

Thanks for your reply. How do I give tech support the new password (i didn't want this to count as one of my support tickets)? Also, is there a way that I can GPG encrypt it or something similar, as I like to avoid sending passwords via email?
Thanks,
Ryan

Tickets are submitted over HTTPS, so that should be safe. And I doubt they send support tickets outside their network...
Btw, the 'default' password is not default at all. It's generated uniquely for each server.
Might be in your best interest to keep the generated password instead of changing it to one you are familiar with (if that's what you are doing).
Yes, I noticed that the original password sent to me was generated, but also it was sent to me via regular email, so for extra security, I just wanted to change it to something else (which is also randomly generated). But yes, that's true - the ticket system is under HTTPS, so that should work - I didn't notice that before.
Thanks,
Ryan
