This it NOT a Microsoft bashing thread, but I just *had* to post this. I went off to windows updates on my wife's computer to make sure she doesn't kill our home's network, and check out what was waiting for her:
NEC Corporation - Input Devices
NEC mouse software update released on December 13 2002.
Download size: 16.3 MB, 10 minutes
Supported hardware...
16 MEGABYTES FOR A MOUSE DRIVER?? I've always known MS makes bloatware, but that is just rediculous. :) Anyhow, I thought it was worth a laugh...

I got one better than that ..
We have crash carts in our datacenters with a monitor and keyboard so we can plug into servers for troubleshooting. Here we have all Microsoft natural keyboards, but at our new datacenter they use generic keyboards. They use generic keyboards there because sometimes the Microsoft natural keyboards will lock up a machine when they plug it in.
A couple weeks ago we had a problem where no one could get console access on any Windows 2000/2003 servers. It looked like the servers were locking up, but they still responded to RDC connections and you could log in through RDC without a problem. This bugged us for days until someone decided to try a Microsoft natural keyboard .. voila! Somehow Microsoft managed to make their OS incompatible with some PS/2 keyboards, and their keyboards incompatible with some PS/2 systems. Next they'll build a mouse that will only work on a Microsoft mousepad ..
Now every crash cart has two keyboards, a Microsoft natural and a generic straight keyboard.

Three things......
1.) December 13 2002 - a little behind aren't we?
2.) Download size: 16.3 MB - Yes a little meaty but...it is a 'software'
update, not just drivers. Plus++++ They might bundle
all their OS's into one package for convenience. If you have ever
programmed something and had to bundle it into an installer, you
will love this method.
3.) I love my Windows 2000. Never had any major problems. (not
really any to speak of). My windows 2000 in front of me, RedHat 9.0
to my left, Mandrake 8 to my right and Window XP in my laptop. Just
like tv or radio, if you don't like something, switch the channel :D

OK, we'll start rebooting servers to plug a keyboard in ;) It's bad enough Windows requires a reboot to use a PS/2 mouse.

Seems a little odd doesn't it? That update was not there a few weeks ago. No word of a lie...

What software does one get *with a mouse*!? :)
Just like tv or radio, if you don't like something, switch the channel :D
I don't watch that channel, the wife does. I wonder if she would notice if I slipped Mandrake under her nose... The things a guy has to endure for love. "Honey, spend more time with me rather than your friends". "Honey, don't you think its time to trade in the bike and get a mini-van?". "Honey, please patch my Windows box.". Ugh! :)
