I'm very interested in getting a Debian dedicated host at ServerBeach, but before I sign-on, I was hoping to get a little more detail about the initial config and setup of the server.

A few questions, but any additional detail you can provide would be great.

- Should I assume Debian 3.0 woody(stable)?
- what kernel are you using (bf2.4, custom, etc.)?
- what's the initial partition layout and what filesystems are you using?
- does ServerBeach provide any DNS service, or is all DNS performed/arranged by customer?
- initial installed services (ssh, etc.)

That's all I can think of right now, but please provide any info that might help give some insight on the initial setup.

Thanks.

The default Debian install is indeed Woody (3.0 stable) with all of the latest security patches available from security.debian.org. It is a very minimal installation .. the only services running are sshd and webmin in SSL mode. The install is minimal because most Debian administrators have a do-it-yourself attitude and would rather tweak out the system in their own way, and it is very easy to install dozens of applications in only a few minutes with Debian (go apt!).

The kernel is a custom 2.4.21 kernel configured similar to the standard Debian kernels. The filesystem is the same as the RedHat servers, with a 40-70MB /boot, 1024MB swap, and the rest of the drive for the root partition (/). The same DNS services are available to all ServerBeach servers and customers. You can find more information about basic services in the FAQ on our website.
