Host _______________. MYLESCORP.COM
IP Address ______________

The blank spaces above are what i can enter info into.

i can make this change at my domain registrar.

i guess i would enter under host "server1" because the name of my server is server1.mylescorp.com

then i would enter my ip "69.44.57.44

I am currently using serverbeach's nameservers

Should i do this?
Why should i do this?

so far i have a couple of hosted web sites on my own server that seem to be working fine, i am unsure what doing the stuff listed above will accomplish.

Thank you

If you don't need it, I would suggest not doing it. If you don't know if you need it, most likely you don't. It is beneficial for many reasons, one of which is if you host many websites especially with different registrars. One of which I use it for my own DNS server. When I switched to ServerBeach, I simply changed the IP address of my name servers at my domain name Registrar. If I didn't register my own domain name servers, I would have had to go to each and every domain account among all the registrars and changed their DNS. This would have taken me many hours. It took 20 seconds to change the IPs of my name servers. It is also beneficial if you have your own DNS server and use the DNS tool in "MyServerBeach" to set your DNS server as the master and GeoDns as the slave. Use your Name Server for the primary and GeoDns for the secondary. So in short, if you don't have many many website being hosted, don't worry about it. You most likely won't need it. Of course this is only my opinion.

I plan on using this server for hosting. As a result i would expect to have dozens of sites hosted.

So to set this up can i just enter the info i listed in the previous post at my domain registrar. Will that be it? Or do i have to do the following to?

1. Purchase another IP
2. Change settings under WHM
3. Change settings under Server Beach DNS Tool

thanks for your help

This is what you could try, but I would suggest you get a second opinion or even a third just in case and for the record, I can't be held responsible if things go wrong (Not that it will :) ): Make sure you configured your DNS server properly. Use "NS1.YOURDOMAINNAME.COM" at the registrar as your name server so it is different than the one you have already. Put in your assigned IP address for the primary. Wait a few days for propagation. Set up your DNS in the DNS tool at MyServerBeach for your server to be the master. Change all your websites DNS to your Name Servers. Wait 48-72 hours for propagation. I wish I could be more specific but I am sure their are other members of this board that could assist you better who are more experienced.

EDIT: My server at ServerBeach is my first and the first time I am using my own DNS server. This is why I would get a second or third opinion.

I prefer to do what you're talking about because in situations like Friday when the geodns.net servers dropped all the slave DNS info and stopped resolving domain names, the only sites of mine that still worked were those that had my server listed as one of the nameservers for the domain names (after Friday all my domains have my server listed as a nameserver in case the geodns disaster happens in the future).

So do what you're planning on doing w/ your registrar in setting up a nameserver w/ one of your domains.

Configure the DNS on your server; let us know if you need help.

Add the geodns servers as slaves and set their DNS info for each domain.

Add your newly established nameserver to each of your domains in addition to the geodns servers.

You get DNS backup, and full control of your DNS which is nice when you want to make quick changes and don't want to use a slow quirky web based tool to do it. It's worth learning.
