I know I need a second IP address but how do I go about using my own nameservers with Serverbeach? I dont really like the DNS tool on the site. I am running a power server with cPanel.

You would need to run your own DNS server on your machine.

Chances are, you are already running a nameserver.
Log into your WebHosting Manager as root, and go to the DNS Functions section; from there, you can edit your dns settings.
You may also want to add an entry to the top of your /etc/resolv.conf like so:
nameserver 127.0.0.1

I know you can use Bind, but you will have to get someone else to help you with that. I use Windows, and don't know very much about Linux.

I am going to stick with the SB DNS for now I guess, I am on a tight time table to get this all back online.
I do have a quick question that I posted in the cPanel area. When a client adds a subdomain do I have to add it to the SB DNS area in order for it to work? and if so is there a way around this to make them all work right away? It would be a hassle to have to do this with each member when they add a subdomain.

That's the reason why you should use your DNS server on your own box and tell the SB dns to mirror yours. CPanel automatically adds subdomains to your nameserver as you add them.

In the ServerBeach DNS Tool area, when you're creating your main domain (or any one on your machine for that matter) you have 2 initial choices.
1. Use ServerBeach to handle DNS
2. Use your own and let ServerBeach download that information.
I guess you would have to choose the second option and use the DNS server on your machine.

so okay for me to use my own server I need 2 IPs right? And in order to get another IP from SB I need to send them a SSL certificate or something which I dont have. It is all so very confusing.
If I added *.domain.com and pointed it to the IP address inside of the SB DNS tool, wouldnt that let all subdomains a client adds work?

Extra IP's are $5 a month, I didn't hear that you need an SSL server. What the FAQ say is that you should only nedd an extra IP if you are planning on using an SSL server because the SSL headers are encrypted. If your DNS/Webserver tools support it, all domains can go on one IP through name based hosting. So an additional IP would only be required when the header needs encryption like for SSL servers.
I think you can use your localhost as your DNS server if you plan on setting up a DNS host so you already have 2 IP's if you think about it. To the public it will your server's IP however.

It is not necessary to buy additional IP's for Virtual Hosts.
You can if you want to however.

Hello,
Most registrars require 2 name servers (foreign registrars atleast). In order to have 2 DNS servers you need 2 ip's on the same machine. Then you can add A records in the dns table for ns1 and ns2.yourdomain.com

Good point...forgot about that...My server doesnt have 2 IP's because our second DNS is offsite.

Wouldn't you put in both of SB's DNS servers and let them mirror yours? That would be your 2. I think that will work.

Like I said, I am new to most of this so I have to say I am a bit lost here. I just want subdomains to work. :(

Nameserver is dirt simple.
I use GoDaddy.com and all I had to do was go into there admin tools and specify that my IP address was NS1.adomainihost.com and NS2.adomainihost.com.
Now whenever I buy a new domain I just plug in my NS1 and NS2's, setup the domain name in Plesk and in 12-36 hours everything is setup and running.

[i]I just want subdomains to work. :( [/B] if the www.domainname.com works, then just go into plesk and setup subdomain.domainname.com and it will work. I know in plesk all the subdomains get setup as completly seperate sites.

Dan,
If he is using plesk and does that it will work fine - as long as he is doing his own dns. Other wise if SB is you need to contact them to add an A record for the subdomain into the FQDN zone file.
